HHDUGC v St Anne’s Old Links
St Anne’s Old Links
Sunday 26th April
As the sun went down over the Fylde coast and the first leg of the 69th Annual match between St Anne’s Old Links and the Halifax, Huddersfield and District Union of Golf Clubs had been completed there was a reflection on what had been a special day. The wind burned faces not telling the full story of tradition, friendship, fantastic golf and the competitiveness of all who take part.
The weather had been fantastic overhead but the keen wind ensuring that long sleeves and on occasion woolly head gear were required. The morning golf is foursomes and the afternoon four ball better ball, this year for the first in many the Executive score being added to the ‘players score’ to determine the overall match result.
As we all amble around the course catching up on how people have wintered, the state of Manchester United’s back four and countless other daily conversations the desire to hit good shots and win is undiminished.
Whether it be big Bob from behind the bar bombing out huge drives and having countless birdies in amongst less impressive scores or Paul Taylor holing a bunker shot, yes apparently it happened!
The golf followed by a hearty meal, a couple of drinks and favourable words. The photograph doesn’t show the individual’s memories of a special day but all will have at least one. The beaming smile and eulogies of on one of the HHDUGC players having played the course for the first time encompassing the whole day.
The score, well there was one but it’s immaterial; friendship, kindness and tradition the winners on such an occasion.
